A Smooth Start: The Year 7 Transition Program at CLC

Starting Year 7 is a whirlwind of emotions – excitement for new beginnings, anticipation of possibilities and maybe even butterflies! We get it. Our aim is to provide a transition program which prepares our students for the changes and challenges they face as they undertake their new schooling journey.

At Catholic Ladies’ College (CLC), we want the transition from Grade 6 to Year 7 to be a warm welcome into our vibrant school community. That’s why we’ve tailored the Year 7 transition program to cater for our wonderful new CLC students.

Our unique, six week ‘Thrive’ program focuses on building confidence, academic success and facilitating the development of friendships. We’ll equip your daughter with the knowledge to confidently navigate the beautiful College grounds, learn essential study skills and time-management techniques, as well as experiencing a taste of the wide variety of opportunities that CLC has to offer.

We hope that through our extensive Thrive program, students will arrive to CLC on their first day of Year 7 feeling confident, capable and excited to begin this significant new chapter in their lives.

We value your partnership as a parent. We’ll keep you informed with regular updates and opportunities to connect with our dedicated Year 7 team.

Together, let’s make your daughter’s transition to CLC a smooth and enriching experience.

Booklists

The 2025 booklist will be available in November.

CLC partners with Campion Education to provide a convenient online ordering system for all required resources.

Once the booklist is published, we encourage families to place their orders early. To ensure delivery to your home by January 2025, orders must be placed by Friday, 13 December 2024.

Uniforms

Our school uniform is available for purchase at Academy Uniforms in Thomastown or through their website. Uniform fittings for Year 7 students starting in 2025 will take place later in the year, with further details expected in October 2024.

Additionally, the Parents' Association hosts a Second-Hand Uniform Sale to assist families looking for pre-owned uniforms. Stock availability can vary and not all items may be in stock at all times. The sale is held in the College Hall, with the next scheduled for Tuesday, 10 December 2024, following Orientation Day.

There are a range of options for your daughter to come to CLC each day including public transport, private buses and drop-off/pick-up.

Bring Your Own Device Program

Our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) portal is now live and ready for orders. You can access it via the link provided, along with a "How to Guide" for assistance. To enter the portal, use the code CLC2025.

At these appointments, our IT team will:
- Connect your child’s device to the CLC Wi-Fi
- Download Microsoft Office to the device
- Set up your child’s CLC email address
- Set up their CLC Connect Learning Portal
- Install the CLC Printers.

These IT sessions will be held during the middle of December 2024 and the middle of January 2025.

CLC Values

At CLC, our values form the heart of our community and shape the character of our students. The core attributes of Courage, Responsibility, Excellence, Wisdom and Belonging reflect what we aspire to instill in every member of our College. Each of these values represents a distinct goal for our students, staff and parents, guiding their actions and fostering a strong, united community that thrives on these principles.

Mobile Phone Policy

CLC has a clear policy regarding the use of mobile phones by students while on campus. Year 7 and 8 students are required to store their phones in their lockers from the time they arrive until the 3.20pm dismissal bell.

In certain cases, teachers may ask students to bring their phones to class for educational purposes, such as taking photos or participating in learning activities. However, students must receive explicit instructions from their teacher before bringing their phones to class.

At the start of Term 1, 2025, your child will be asked to sign the Digital Devices Policy, acknowledging their understanding of the rights and responsibilities regarding mobile phone use. As parents, you will also be asked to sign the document to confirm that you have discussed digital device usage with your child.

If you need to contact your daughter during school hours, please do so through the College office, and staff will assist in relaying your message if needed.

Homework

We recognise that Term 1 brings significant changes, so we ease students into their new environment by gradually introducing homework.

As students settle into secondary school life, the College’s homework policy recommends up to 1.5 hours of homework per night. This does not include study time or wider reading, both of which are highly encouraged.

Homework tasks and due dates are often posted on our Learning Management System, CLC Connect. Students are also encouraged to use their planners to keep track of assignments and their deadlines.

Year 7 Curriculum

Students follow a two-week timetable that runs from Day 1 to Day 10, with the cycle repeating after Day 10. Each day begins with homeroom, followed by five lessons. Students may have different teachers for each lesson.

Your child will study six core subjects throughout the year, including:
- English
- Health & Physical Education
- Humanities
- Languages (one semester of Indonesian, one semester of Italian)
- Mathematics
- Religion
- Science

In addition to core subjects, students will engage in "Rotational Subjects," each running for one term. Over the year, they will sample eight different subjects, designed to introduce them to a variety of learning areas. These rotational subjects are:
- Dance/Drama
- Digital Technologies
- Music
- Product Design (Materials)
- Product Design (Textiles)
- STEM-Maker
- Visual Art
- Visual Communication & Design

These rotations offer students the opportunity to explore new subjects beyond what they may have experienced in primary school.

Extension Opportunities

There are several extension opportunities available for Year 7 students who wish to challenge themselves, including:
- Student Leadership Program
- Mathematics Tutorials
- Year 7 Philosophy Program
- Debating and Public Speaking Program
- Tournament of Minds

We encourage all students to aim for their personal best and take full advantage of the enriching opportunities available at CLC.
